Sarah Hudson: Naked Truth
SHINE EXCLUSIVE

Sarah Hudson has been surrounded by entertainers her entire life. Her father is a music producer, originally known for his 70's musical group, the "Hudson Brothers." Her mother was a dancer. To top it off, her cousin is well-known actress Kate Hudson, which makes the even more well-known actress, Goldie Hawn, her aunt. But now, armed with an album that drops in June titled Naked Truth, and her own individuality, this 23-year old singer is ready to create a legacy of her own. Shine sat down with Sarah to find out how it all came to be, and what it all really means…

Shine: How would you categorize the music on Naked Truth?

Sarah Hudson: Pop. But I like to think it's more in-depth…meaningful pop.

Shine: What do you think sets you apart from other pop artists today?

Sarah Hudson: As far as album-wise and song-wise--what I talk about on the record, growing up and issues with your parents, I haven't seen it in a lot of pop music. And I'm definitely into very eccentric clothes, and being a performer, and putting on a show.

Shine: Have you had any experience with live performances?

Sarah Hudson: Not with this record or band yet. We'll start in a few weeks, actually. We'll be doing some radio shows and the Rock the Vote tour.

Shine: Coming from a family where your mother, father and other family members have achieved so much, do you feel added pressure for your album to do well?

Sarah Hudson: No, not really. Of course it would be nice, but my family is very supportive. It definitely would be nice to have your record do well, but they're supportive, my whole family, and they're proud of me regardless of success or not.

Shine: Did coming from such a high-profile family have any effect on your decision to become an entertainer yourself?

Sarah Hudson: Definitely. Growing up I was around music all the time because my dad was performing a lot. And my aunt, Goldie Hawn, was always in movies and Kate's doing so well. It was something that just came naturally to me and something I started doing really young. It's kind of like, I don't know what else I would do with my life. Like, if I told my parents I was gonna' be a lawyer they would probably be like, 'what?' Just because it's been so prominent…

Shine: Is there anyone who has been especially influential in your career?

Sarah Hudson: Definitely my dad. He's somebody who has gone through major ups and downs, and I've really learned from him not to take a lot of it personally. He's definitely played a major role as far as business-wise. Also the art of it too, as far as performing, song writing, and loving what you do.

Shine: Who have been some of your musical influences?

Sarah Hudson: Madonna, Prince, Deborah Harry…they are major iconic figures that have definitely been very influential.

Shine: Is there anyone you admire in the music industry today?

Sarah Hudson: I definitely kind of go toward more eccentric artists like Tori Amos and Fiona Apple…. But I definitely have respect for artists like Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera, just because of their longevity. Anyone who's putting themselves out there and surviving--it's incredible. I'm also a very big fan. I love going to concerts and buying CDs…

Shine: You grew up in L.A. Have you relocated to New York?

Sarah Hudson: Yeah, I'm kind of back and forth. I've lived in L.A. my whole life and my dad has a place in New York, so I've always visited--but I would definitely call L.A. my home. I'm in New York now for who knows how long…

Shine: You've said that, growing up, you always felt out of place and were constantly searching for a place to belong. Do you think you've finally found that place as an artist?

Sarah Hudson: I think so. Definitely, because I'm able to kind of express myself and do this as my living…my career. It's hard when you're growing up and there's all this pressure with what you're gonna' do with your life. I definitely feel like I'm coming into my own, and doing this has definitely given me a kind of sense of belonging and not feeling so alien.

Shine: What, in your mind, will mean that this album has been successful?

Sarah Hudson: In a way it's already a success to me because I got to work with the people I wanted to work with and I have something that I'm proud of no matter what happens. I can live with it for the rest of my life knowing that it was my vision. I want to touch people, no matter if it's two million, or two. Because I had that when I was younger. My escape was music. If I could do that with just one person, that would mean everything to me.
