Makaveli Branded

By Mark Williams-Washington

In true Makaveli fashion, Tupac Shakur's legacy still lives.

Afeni Shakur has created an official clothing line, Makaveli Branded, in memory of her late son.

Shine Magazine recently spoke to the company's vice president, Rick Edwards, to find what's new, where to get it, and what's next in Makaveli fashion...

Shine: How are you? What's going on?

Makaveli Branded: I'm good. Thanks for asking. As far as what is going on, I am currently getting my events prepared for the Super Bowl and NBA All-Star Weekend. I am also preparing for the Magic Show next month and recently did my photo shoot for my Spring '06 campaign with Chamillionaire and DJ Quick.

Shine: Who came up with the idea of starting Makaveli Branded?

Makaveli Branded: Makaveli Branded was Ms. Shakur's idea. Makaveli Branded is another avenue to continue Tupac's legacy. Fashion is a major component in hip-hop culture, and also great way to build awareness for the Tupac Amaru Shakur Foundation.

Ms. Shakur is an owner in the brand and approves all designs of the brand.

Shine: How is the line doing so far?

Makaveli Branded: The line is doing well. We have expanded into boys, juniors, accessories, and will be launching a shoe division in the near future.

The line is also international and available in Japan, Canada, France, Germany, Europe, and other territories globally.

Shine: Do you design women's clothes, or are you anticipating doing so in the future?

Makaveli Branded: Yes, we launched a juniors' division and we are looking into expanding further into women's fashion.

Shine: Where do you get inspiration from? What do you look at to determine styles?

Makaveli Branded: We get inspiration from a variety of sources. We definitely get inspiration from Tupac and his style; we get inspiration from the streets, and also international fashion trends.

Shine: Do you use any of Tupac's family or associates as models in your campaigns?

Makaveli Branded: Yes, most of the artists that I have used in the ad campaigns are associated with Tupac and the estate in some manner. There are also plans to continue working with Tupac's associates in future ad campaigns.

Shine: Where is Makaveli Branded available for purchase?

Makaveli Branded: Makaveli Branded can be purchased at specialty stores nationwide, department stores, chain stores, and various internet sites.

Shine: What's up next for Makaveli Branded and Rick Edwards?

Makaveli Branded: The goal of the brand is to continue to grow. As I stated, we will be launching a shoe division this year and we may also launch a sportswear division. This year will be the 10th year since Tupac passed away and I have some major events planned... a mixtape, and entire 10-year campaign planned.

I also launched my production company, The Studio Beatz, and I am working with three artists: Steve Wallace, Romey, and Benny Cassette.

Shine: Any last words or shout outs?

Makaveli Branded: I would like to thank Shine Magazine and everyone across the globe that supports Makaveli Branded.
