DJ Khaled
99 Jamz - Terror Squad - Live in Miami

By Lisa Dumas
Co-Editor

Miami's DJ Khaled talks with Shine Magazine about his secrets to success, what separates him from the rest, and his plan to take the DJ game to a whole 'nother level.

Shine: When did you know you wanted to be a DJ?

Khaled: When I was 14. I always liked music, always bought CD's records and tapes-so I decided to be a DJ.

Shine: What does it take to be a good DJ?

Khaled: It takes a lot of strength and energy to be a good DJ. You have to have an open mind and be a people person. To be successful you have to have loyalty to your fans. You have to know what people want from the hood, to the radio, to the clubs

Shine: Who are some of your favorite DJs today?

Khaled: Funk Flex, Kid Capri, Kay Slay. But my favorite DJ, most of all, is me.

Shine: How long have you been with 99 Jamz?

Khaled: For about four years, on and off.

Shine: What's the difference between DJing on the radio and DJing in the club?

Khaled: On the radio you have to play all different types of music depending on your audience.

Shine: How did you become a part of the Terror Squad?

Khaled: I've known Fat Joe for eight years. He's like my brother.

Shine: What do you think Miami brings to the hip-hop game and the music industry that other places don't?

Khaled: Everyone wants to come to Miami. It's a party city as well as a cultured city. We got Hatians, Puerto Ricans, Mexicans, whites, blacks-all kinds of people.

Shine: What advice would you give to aspiring DJs?

Khaled: Don't ever give up. You have to be a people person. You have to communicate with the people.

Shine: What are your plans for the future?

Khaled: I want to take the music game to another level. I want to take the radio game to a whole 'nother level. I want to open some clothing stores, and I want to stay healthy, happy, and have a family.

Shine: What separates you from other DJs?

Khaled: My energy. Just when you thought the party was hot, here comes DJ Khaled!
